Fork In The Road

Chapter 9 – Back to School

So now here I was, after spending four years at college, back at another college.

Hunter College, part of the City University of New York (CUNY), was pretty much a Liberal Arts school. It had, at one point, specialized in Nursing, and the percentage of women to men was outrageous. I was getting whiplash walking the hallways. I was still involved on and off with my future wife, but there were times when we were “off”, and I do admit to having a couple of “dalliances”, as it were. It was very tempting

They had a Computer Center, however, and I eventually got involved in programming, dealing with handling Enrollment, Accounting, etc., the functioning of any business. I came in with no knowledge of the language they were using, COBOL, which is an acronym for Common Business Oriented Language. So my first order of business was to teach myself COBOL.

I mentioned my manager in the previous chapter. Once I got there, I did not actually deal with him a lot, although his daughter did eventually come into my life. She became a co-worker, friend and more. I believe she lives here in San Diego now, but I have no idea where. Sad, we had a lot of fun. She lived in Midtown Manhattan. We worked together in Midtown Manhattan, and we spent time at her place and at the place my sister and I had bought in the Borough Park/Midwood area of Brooklyn (details later).

There was the other person, at the interview, however, who I dealt with more frequently. (More about him in the future.)

Meanwhile, since I had a scientific background, they created a position for me. I became the Academic Liaison, dealing with people from the college doing scientific research on our computer.

Computers were, I won’t say in their infancy, but maybe in their early adolescence. Hunter didn’t really have a Computer Programming Department. It was an adjunct to their Math Department. I was assigned to teach a class in Fortran, the language I had taught myself at Polytech. I was pretty psyched, but not enough people enrolled, so it was cancelled. Bummer!

Luckily, I was able to try my hand at teaching in a future fork. I didn’t mention it earlier, but when I was younger, I thought about being a math teacher. I always liked learning new things. Still do. And I like to explain things, as will come in handy in future forks. I love it when you see that "A-ha!" look in someone's eyes when they "get it." I would like to think that is why many people go into the teaching profession, because they certainly are not going to get rich doing it. But I digress.

This was a pretty fun fork. Some of the next ones are going to kind of merge into each other, as they happen simultaneously. Nine so far, and I am only in my mid-twenties.

Now we go onto double digits…
